Why should I hire a Social Media Manager??

I guess I could start off by asking you “why do you hire someone to cut your grass or clean your house?” or “why do you pay someone to move your home or office?” .

Usually you will get 1 of 3 different answers:

1. I’m to busy and don’t have time
2. They have the expertise or equipment that I don’t have
3. I’m just lazy!

I’ve had the luxury of being a social media manager for a business to now owning my own business. I started my business managing my own social media, and had LOTS of time to perfect it! But as the business grew so did my TO DO list – accounting, hiring, customer service, networking, marketing, and oh yea Social Media. Your postings go from once a day to every other day to a couple times a month. Your office gets covered with sticky notes of great blog ideas!
Unfortunately – consistency is one of the most important factors of a successful social networking campaign (content being another). It doesn’t matter what your goal is for social networking you have to be consistent:
Visibility – if you aren’t consistent you aren’t visible.
Customer Service – If you aren’t monitoring everyday and responding then you aren’t providing customer service.
Branding – Well I believe you are getting the idea!!
It didn’t take me long to pay for my own services I offer other businesses – social media marketing!! Don’t let good intentions keep you from growing your community, enhancing your customer service, or building your brand.

I caution you on hiring a social media manager just because of your lack of expertise!! The experience a social media manager is a true asset, but your lack of knowledge can sometimes negate that asset. I don’t ever expect my clients to get on the same level as our consultants, but learning the basics gives them a better understanding of what to expect and helps us create the RIGHT campaign…..one that can deliver results. (When searching for a social media manager, ask them if they offer free tutorials to their customers).

And, well if your answer is #3 – I’m just lazy – and you weren’t to lazy to read this far into the blog, I suggest you find that passion that drove you to starting your own business in the first place. Because right now you probably aren’t a good candidate for a social media manager to deliver good results.

If you have any questions on how to find a good social media manager or how you can create a successful social networking campaign yourself, feel free to comment or email Networking WINS and ask us.

Google + verses Facebook

By now you’ve probably heard a little about Google+. Maybe you’re wondering what all the fuss is about, or maybe you’re cringing at the thought of having to learn all about another social media site.

Here’s a quick run down of some of the differences and similarities (both pros and cons) that you can expect between Google+ and Facebook.

- You really do “like” us. With Facebook, you can easily ‘like’ comments, photos, videos, statuses, etc. The same concept overlaps in Google+ too. You can +1 to show your support for a friend’s hard work.

- Circle of Friends. In Google+ you can create circles where you specify a group of people as your circle of friends. You can share specific information, statuses, photos, etc with these circles of people, thus upping the ante of privacy in comparison to Facebook.

- Let’s hangout. Google+ allows users, and your circle of friends, to video chat and “hangout.” Facebook, however, is working on an agreement with video mogul Skype to create video chat through its social site, too.

- Invites. Maybe you’re ready to take a peek at Google+ and see how it can help your business. Whoops. Better have an invite, first. The site is still in its development phase, so just not anyone is allowed access. Google has yet to announce when the site will “go live” for everyone, though.

Well-done Facebook landing pages

When someone visits your Facebook business page for the first time, where do they go? Or land? What’s the first thing that sticks out to them about your business?

Your answer should be awe-inspiring. It needs to be something that catches a viewer’s eye and also makes them want to “like” your page.

Here are a few suggestions on what to do for that first, landing page.

- Contest. This is the easy one. Create a landing page where when you ‘like’ your business page, you are automatically entered into a contest to win something or receive a prize. Who wouldn’t want to click “like”, right?

- Discount. Another easy idea. Whenever someone “likes” your business, they will receive a promotion code to be used online or in a store for a certain amount off. Make sure the discount is worthwhile, though. Contests and discounts are easy ways to make your page go viral and spread. When one friend likes your page, many more might, too, if a discount or well-run contest is taking place.

- Video. Create a video and showcase it on your landing page. This will (hopefully) captivate your viewer’s attention and make them engaged in your company.

- Unique. Advertise on your landing page that you’ll be able to find out more about your company by ‘liking’ the page. For example, you can set up your Facebook business page to allow people who “like” the page to see one thing, and be able to comment and respond too. Those who have yet to “like” your page, might see only limited information and not be able to comment on your business wall.

- Ask. A simple landing page asking viewers to “like” your page is always straight forward and easy to follow.

“Dos” and “Dont’s” of a Facebook business page

DO create one! It’s an easy way to interact with your customers and keep them up-to-date on what’s happening with your company.

DON’T ignore the page. Remember to post often on your business page. Set up a schedule (or better yet, let a company handle it for you… and we just might know a good one to recommend!).

DO interact with your followers. Offer contests, giveaways, coupon codes and more to those loyal to you. Also think about giving a free item or coupon away when people check into your business too.

DO promote your page. We’ve said it so many times, but it bears repeating. Print your Facebook address on receipts, business cards, flyers, brochures, anything with your company logo. Make sure your signature on your email account also links to your Facebook page too.

DO make sure you grab your unique Facebook URL. Once you hit 25 “likes”, make sure you grab your nice, neat URL name. This will be much easier for passing out and sharing instead of having to copy and paste numbers, letters and weird symbols.

DON’T skip blogging. This is a great way to “up” your company when someone searches for your topics. Don’t forget to tag appropriately, and include as many words as you can, to increase your chances of catching many more followers.

DON’T be scared. Some companies are worried about creating a business page based on what might be posted there from other people. People posting on your page is exactly what you want! You can respond to criticism, celebrate with those who cheer you and help work out any problems that customers have encountered.

Other great web sites to check out

A few months ago we listed a few of our favorite web sites (besides ours, of course) to visit. So click away from Facebook, put down the Twitter stalking and learn a thing or two about social networking from these great locations.

Social Media Examiner. One of our favorites. This site is a great place to turn when you want practical, real-world tips and tricks that you can use for your business. Wondering how to effectively establish a Twitter schedule? Unsure what kind of customers you want to attract to your Facebook and Twitter pages? Need advice on how to best engage your followers? Find those answers in an easy-t0-use format at Social Media Examiner.

Mashable. We’ve said it before. This is the heavy hitter. The big guns. Mashable is more indepth site to learn about what’s in and what’s out and what’s to come in the world of technology and social media. It also keeps you in-the-know about big technology announcements, such as with new iPads, iPhones and other techy devices.

Tech Crunch. This site seems more “newsy” than the rest, and is a great resource when you’re looking to find out about what’s going on. Wondering about promoted Tweets, or why you’re seeing some ads in your Facebook feed? Tech Crunch will explain it.

So what are some of your favorite places to go to keep abreast of the social networking world?

Using the Facebook ‘question’ app

Have you played with the Facebook ‘question’ tab yet? It’s a great way to engage your followers in your page and generate responses. Wondering what kind of questions to ask? Here are a few suggestions.

- Products. If you own a restaurant, list a few of your appetizers, and ask which they like best. If you’re a real estate agent, ask your followers which part of the house they find most important. If you are a small business owner, ask which of your products followers find most interesting. There are several opportunities to engage your followers with product type questions.

- Current Events. If you’ve noticed, most of your friends on Facebook have pretty strong opinions. Ask a current event question and see how your business page followers respond. Current events are a sure way to get people talking, fired up and making comments on your business page.

- Wishes. Ask questions about what they wish would happen. For example, if you own a small business, generate a question about whether people would rather have a new restaurant in the neighborhood or a new grocery store. Ask if they would rather have a new pool in their subdivision or a new exercise room. Asking “what if” type questions can also generate several comments.

How are you engaging your followers on Facebook and creating opportunities for them to comment on your business page?

Have you visited your LinkedIn profile lately?

Well you should!

LinkedIn is such a great site to help promote….you! Here are a few suggestions on getting LinkedIn to help generate business for your company.

- Update your profile. This means, for starters, make sure you have a profile picture and correct contact information. Update where you’re working and your previous employers, too. Keep everything current to make sure you present your best self.

- Use the recommendation section. If you’ve worked with someone, leave him or her a great recommendation. It helps “sell” them, and in return, they can leave you a recommendation, too. Ask clients of yours to leave recommendations on your LinkedIn profile, too. Nothing is better than outstanding word-of-mouth advertising.

- Search around and show your knowledge. What does this mean? Simple. If you’re in the plumbing industry, for example, spend some time nosing around and looking for people asking plumbing-related questions. Show your expertise by answering the questions and leaving your contact information for more details. Same goes with every profession…answer questions for anyone who is looking for answers in your genre.

- Network. Now is not the time to pick sides or draw lines in the sand. Ask to be connected to people from all walks of business, which includes your competitors. You just might be surprised when you need to get in touch with someone from the “other” company one day.

Won’t you be my neighbor?

There are several ways to “meet your neighbor” without leaving your house. By engaging in conversation with people in the same community as you, it increases the amount of business traffic that might walk through your door.

Here are some ways to “meet” local people through your business Twitter page.

- Search for your community. Twitter is great about finding local folks on “People You Should Follow.” Once you find one or two active Twitter folks in your area, start seeing who they are following, and follow them as well. Is there a popular, locally run restaurant in your area? See if they have a Twitter page and find out who is following them. It’s a great — and simple — way to find local Twits.

- Search by landmarks. So maybe it’s not the World’s Largest Ball of Twine, but any local landmark is usually a hot spot for people to follow on Twitter. Maybe a water park? An amusement park? Local library? Search Twitter and see if they are active in Twitter. If so, follow them, and find others who follow those pages too.

- Community events. Does your subdivision have an annual summer parade? Does your town host a festival every fall? Search for the event through Twitter and see what pops up. By following these events, you can follow who is active in the community, too.

The social network social scene

The social scene isn’t dead, and for once we’re not talking about just on the Internet! Here’s what we mean….

Imagine you are at a party. There are lots of people you don’t know, so you start to mingle. When you walk up to people, do you immediately start telling them about the great company you work for, the house that you are selling on the lake or the restaurant that offers a discount if you mention them on Twitter? Probably not. Well, if you do, you probably have a lot of strange looks headed your way.

The same “etiquette” applies on the social scene on the Internet, too. Just because you have a business page doesn’t mean you should talk about your business on every post, tweet or blog. When people are visiting your page for the first time, it is like the first time you would meet in person. They want to get to know you, your personality, your likes and dislikes and your overall persona. Then they’ll listen to you about your business.

How can this apply to your business? Take time to develop a personality on your business page. Don’t be too “selly” on every post. Let people know you as a person.

Who is in charge of your social networking?

Straight-forward question… but what’s your answer? Is it an intern at your company? Is it you in your spare time or when you think about it? Is it the receptionist who is bogged down with 101 other things to worry about and do on a day-to-day basis, too? Is it no one?

First off, social networking needs to be — must be — part of your company’s media campaign. Facebook’s numbers are astounding… 700 million accounts will be reached soon. That is huge. Break that down to just the United States, and then just your region and that’s still a large number of eyes that can be looking at your company’s business page. You must have a presence on Facebook, and it needs to be someone responsible and reliable for your company.

We’ve said it before… your business needs to have a daily social networking strategy. Set up a campaign where your are actively engaged in your company’s Facebook pages with followers and Twitter comments from fans. Reply back to people who leave comments on your wall or Twitter account. Get engaged in the conversation.
